Tulane Monitoring Swine Flu

Tulane University is closely monitoring developments in the international outbreak of swine influenza.

No cases of swine influenza have been reported in Louisiana.

Tulane has established a flu task force to collect information about the swine influenza and to make sure we are prepared. In addition, we are monitoring the actions of federal, state and local public health officials as the situation develops.

At this time Tulane is not issuing any restrictions on international travel.
However, we do strongly recommend that faculty, staff or students traveling internationally register with International SOS here:

By registering with International SOS, Tulane can account for the whereabouts of any faculty, staff or students, and assist them in an emergency situation if needed.

Parking on uptwon campus

Dear Tulane Community,

I received so many questions about parking and shuttle service in response to my first e-mail that I wanted to provide you with some updated and expanded information as we close in on the May 18 start of the McAlister Place project.

Although parking is being eliminated on McAlister Place from Freret Street to Drill Road, the number of spaces available on campus will remain the same as parking is shifted to the Rosen lot at Ben Weiner Drive and South Claiborne Avenue.

The Rosen lot is accessible from South Claiborne Avenue and is open from 6 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday. Only green staff, blue faculty and red commuter student parking permits will be recognized at Rosen. As usual, campus visitors can purchase one-day parking passes in the Office of Public Safety in order to park on campus, including the Rosen lot.

Beginning in August, the new Rosen shuttle route will run from the Rosen lot through the middle campus and back to Rosen. When the shuttle is not running, TUPD offers escorts to any location on campus. You can request an escort at any time by dialing x5381. The Safe Ride shuttle is available to take riders off campus as well. In addition, TUPD is adding a satellite security location at the corner of Ben Weiner Drive and South Claiborne Avenue adjacent to the Rosen lot.

Seminar: Health System of Taiwan in Transition: Evolution from a Market-oriented system to a National Health Insurance Program

There will be a seminar held at Downtown Campus (Tidewater Building) on April 17th at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm regarding Taiwan's highly praised National Health Insurance Program. Three guest speakers, Dr. 江東亮, Dr. 楊志良, Dr. 黃明和 are professors specially invited from Taiwan.

The PBS aired a program “Sick Around the World” in FRONTLINE on April 15, 2008 to describe health-care systems of five developed capitalist democracies –UK, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, and Taiwan. At the end of the program, the conclusion drawn was that Taiwan’s health system may be one of the best in the world. The 2008 Nobel Prize Winner in Economics, Professor Paul Krugman, also mentioned that the US should consider following Taiwan’s example in reforming American’s health care system.

Due to high level of interests in Taiwan’s health care system in the USA now, the Department of Health Systems Management (HSM) at School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine, Tulane University, has decided to organize a seminar on the topic. It will be of great value for researchers, policy-makers, students and all others interested in health reform discussions to learn about Taiwan’s system directly from the decision-makers of the system, those who played crucial roles in its design, development and implementation.

The seminar entitled “Health System of Taiwan in Transition: Evolution from a Market-oriented system to a National Health Insurance Program” will be held on April 17th, 2009 from 2 to 4 PM at Tidewater Auditorium, 1440 Canal Street. The invited guest speakers from Taiwan are: Professor Tung-Liang Chiang, Dean of National Taiwan University, College of Public Health; Professor Chih-Liang Yaung, Vice President of Asia University; and Professor Ming-Ho Huang, President of Show Chwan Healthcare System, Taiwan.

President Cowen and several members of the university's senior leadership are now in New Orleans where they will direct Tulane's reopening. The team will also continue to monitor the city’s readiness to repopulate in the next few days. A contingent of Tulane senior staff members remain in Nashville.

The city has suggested that residents return to New Orleans starting tomorrow. The energy company, Entergy, is having difficulty in restoring power in certain parts of the parish, including the neighborhoods surrounding the university. Given this important issue and the likely heavy traffic expected Thursday and Friday, we strongly recommend you plan your return for Saturday or Sunday. We believe this to be the most prudent return strategy, especially for out-of-state students, given the issues still facing the city. After the Tulane team confers with city officials, we will let you know if there are any changes in our reopening schedule.

The Tulane team is also closely monitoring an emerging storm named Ike. Based on consultations with Tulane’s weather advisory service, it is much too early to project whether Ike poses a threat to the New Orleans area. We will continue to track and update you on Ike.

The mandatory evacuation of Orleans Parish makes the logistics of reopening Tulane University on the originally stated dates--Wednesday, Sept. 3 and Thursday, Sept. 4--very difficult. Therefore, we have decided to resume normal business operations on Saturday, Sept. 6. The dorms will reopen on Sunday, Sept. 7, and classes will resume on Monday, Sept. 8. Our next update will be tomorrow at 3 p.m.

NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana officials and residents cast a wary eye on the Caribbean Sea as Tropical Storm Gustav strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane. On Tuesday afternoon, The National Hurricane Center included New Orleans in its five-day cone, an area including places where Gustav might produce 58 MPH winds within that time period.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the NHC listed a five percent chance of those winds reaching the area. The NHC also predicted a 10-20 percent chance of tropical-storm force winds in New Orleans in the next five days.

OISS is holding an orientation on August 26, 2008 for all new International Students. This orientation is mandatory for all NEW students (Students at the Public Health Campus and who have already attended an orientation at the Business or Law School do not need attend, but are welcome to come).

The orientation begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held in the Kendall Cram Room (2nd floor) of the Lavin-Bernick Center. It is very important that you attend this event in order to get more information about Tulane, and about maintaining your immigration status.

Following the orientation, OISS will host a welcome luncheon at 1:30 p.m. in the Kendall Cram Room. All new students and scholars are welcome to attend the lunch.

Attention all Public Health Students:

There will be an orientation for all new students at the School of Public Health on August 26, 2008 from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. in the Tidewater Building, Room 1210. Students who attend the School of Public Health do not need to attend the Uptown orientation, but must attend the one in Tidewater!

I am so sorry that I am late to send this invitation. I know that most people already have plans for Thanksgiving holidays. Some people may take trips. Anyway, if you will stay New Orleans during Thanksgiving holidays, you should join us.
